Action at the local level

Progress is being made at the state and local levels as legislatures, cities, counties and school districts work to green our schools. It's happening because people like you are working in cooperation with governments, school officials, teachers, parents and students to pass policies to promote green school construction.

While most resolutions and policies make green schools a requirement, others offer incentives to encourage green schools. Additional creative approaches are being developed as more and more people learn about the benefits of green schools.

Find out how you can get involved and help pass a green schools resolution in your school district.

Alexandria, Va.

Thomas Jefferson High School in Alexandria, Virginia, Solar Panel Initiative.

At Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Va., students have formed the Solar Panel Initiative (TJSPI) – a group that is raising the $20,000 necessary to install solar panels on the school roof. Through this project, the students want to raise awareness of energy-efficient technology at their school and throughout the community. The group plans to add on to the initial array until the school is 100% powered by solar energy. The members of TJSPI are also trying to convince Fairfax County school board members to build their new addition green.
